 Meet our Members

Margaret Hunter: Temple University 10
Maggie volunteered with Project Shine for 5 out of the 6 semesters that she was a student at Temple.  She began tutoring at ACANA and later switched to the Arab-American Community Development Corporation (Al-Aqsa).  As a social work major interested in immigrant and refugee communities, she found her time with Project Shine to be very educational and insightful.  She has thoroughly enjoyed teaching English, being a part of SSAB and getting to know many of the great people involved in Project Shine and its community partner sites!
Jonathan Coyle: Temple University 10
Jon Coyle was a Project Shine volunteer from 2009 to 2010, tutoring Chinese learners at Coffee Cup in Center City Philadelphia and also serving on the Student Advisory Board for two semesters. As a member of the jazz department in Temple's Esther Boyer College of Music, he studied piano performance for four years and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in the Spring of 2010. Currently he is freelancing as a performer and instructor in the Philadelphia area. Jon is very happy to have had a such a positive and inspiring experience with his learners, fellow tutors, and everyone at Project Shine.

Josephine Figlia: Temple University 12

My name is Josephine Figlia and I am an International Business student at Temple University. I first heard about SHINE from a flyer around campus and I've been crazy about it ever since! I love their mission, it is really rewarding to build relationships with elders in our surrounding communities. SHINE has done many things for me including build my confidence, and helped me find my passion for government work as well as given me many oppurtunities, like working with AmeriCorps and making great connections.

Katie Simpson: Temple University Graduate Student
I started tutoring with Shine in the Spring of 2007 and involved myself up until graduation this past Spring semester  2010. I worked only with hispanic learners and volunteered with Open Borders, MANN, Project Ayuda and New World. This Fall I will continue my education at the graduate level and look forward to continue working with Shine and SSAB!
Mike Gates Temple University 13
Mike is a sophomore at Temple University studying Psychology and Criminology. He currently is an AmeriCorps member working with Korean elders at Jaison Center in Norristown. He is fluent in Korean and loves Kim chi!

Semester of Immigrant Awareness  Fall 2010

SSAB’s newest project is our Immigrant Awareness Initiative.

As part of SHINE's newly formed Initiative, SSAB hopes to hold a semester of awareness raising events on Temple University’s Campus around the topic of immigrants in Philadelphia. SSAB hopes that this will provide an opportunity for Temple students to learn about the immigrant experience in Philadelphia. Through this semester the board hopes to create a positive arena in which discussion on this topic can be facilitated along with advocating and informing the student population about issues in their “own back yard.”

Check back later to learn more about this project!
