The Intergenerational Center

Project SHINE is part of a network of programs at The Intergenerational Center. These programs include Experience Corps, Family Friends, Grandma's Kids, Time Out and Coming of Age.  Many of these programs have been replicated nationally.

The Intergenerational Center at Temple University is dedicated to strengthening communities by bringing generations together to meet the needs of individuals and families throughout the life cycle and is a national resource for intergenerational programs.

Through Experience Corps, older adults tutor elementary school students in reading and writing skills; through Family Friends, older adults provide in home support to families of children with special needs; Grandma's Kids provides support to both children who are raised by grandparents or other alternative caregivers and the caregivers through educational and recreational programming as well as counseling; Project SHINE connects college students with older immigrants and refugees in the community and foster mutual learning through ESL instruction; Time Out works with college students to provide in-home respite to families caring for frail elders; And Coming of Age is a new initiative coordinated by the CIL, WHYY, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and AARP, created to help reinvent retirement by inspiring baby boomers and retirees to pursue volunteer, leadership and educational opportunities and by strengthening the capacity of non-profit organizations to identify and provide opportunities which are meaningful to baby boomers and retirees. Additionally, our Training Division distills the knowledge, best practices and lessons learned from this family of programs and offer training and technical assistance to agencies world wide.

While much of our programs operate independently, we all share CIL's unique and innovative approach to social change. We believe that we can address critical needs of the community and positively impact society by recognizing and supporting the leadership of its members, developing roles and programs that allow individuals to make positive contributions to their communities and by investing in the growth of authentic partnerships across individuals and groups of different ages, capacity and culture. Our diverse programs reflect the diverse ways that human beings at all stages of life contribute to the health and richness of a community.
