Learners' Lives as Curriculum begins with intensive listening stage. With learners' texts as catalyst, the next step aims to develop language and literacy lessons that encourage conversations on topics that matter. The third and larger task is to create thematic units that learners agree are critical to address.
Included here are four thematic units written by teachers at City College of San Francisco. The teacher-authors consider them to be works in progress and continue to seek feedback.
- Speaking Up at Work: Our Right to Redress Grievances: Timotha Doane and Venette Cook
- Speaking up for Yourself and Others: Rick Kappra and Suzanne Hovanesian
- Racial Profiling: Denise McCarthy and Tracy Ousdahl
- Speaking up to Landlords: Anna Quan Wong and Rayne Lardie, with Tracy Ousdahl
