The Philip Jaisohn Memorial Center (Jaisohn Center) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 1975. Its mission is to promote and fulfill Dr. Philip Jaisohn's ideals of humanity through medical, social, educational, and cultural services for the enhancement of the quality of life in our communities and particularly those of Korean Americans. Dr. Jaisohn was the first Korean to be naturalized in the United States (1890) and the first Korean to receive a medical degree in a Western institution (1892). Founded by 8 volunteer physicians in 1975, Jaisohn Center serves the wider community through its medical center and various community programs. These programs include benefits counseling, case management, interpretation/translation, insurance counseling, senior training & employment, promotion of Korean culture & heritage, health promotion workshops & screenings (free, confidential HIV testing; mammograms; diabetes classes; influenza immunizations for seniors, etc.) and educational classes geared towards seniors. These classes include ESL, citizenship, fitness, and basic computer literacy.
